SEC extends its presence to Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO — Long a dominant force in the fall, the Southeastern Conference has extended its reach to these Summer Games.

Current and former members of the conference have won 14 medals here, with all but one coming in swimming events. The one caveat is Germany’s Henri Junghänel, the University of Kentucky graduate who took gold in the men’s 50-meter prone rifle.

If the SEC were a country — and many in the league’s geographic footprint do honor it as such — it would rank fifth on the medals table entering Saturday’s competition, one medal ahead of South Korea.
