Russia is competitive with the U.S. and China and can challenge to finish in the top three of the Rio 2016 Olympic medal standings, Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov told news agency TASS.
In 2014, Russia won the most golds (13) and overall medals (33) at the Sochi Winter Games. In the Summer Games, Russia was the top challenger to the U.S. atop the medal standings as recently as 2000 but gave way to China. The U.S. and China were the top two nations in gold medals and overall medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
