When Ethiopia’s Etenesh Diro started her run in the steeplechase preliminary heats in Rio, she had two shoes and was considered a favorite to win. Neither of these things were true by the time the race was over.

Diro fell and experienced a shoe malfunction about halfway through the race. Instead of trying to deal with the shoe, she was threw off her sock and shoe and finish the race with just one shoe.

Even with one shoe, Diro finished in seventh place in her heat, out of 17 women. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near the top three people who will move on to the semifinals.
