The heavyweight boxing competition didn’t provide a surprise with its gold medalist, with the top seed taking gold Monday night.
Russia’s Evgeny Tishchenko, who is also the reigning amateur heavyweight world champion, took gold by unanimous decision over Kazakhstan’s Vassiliy Levit. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 in Tischenko’s favor, making this the second time in the last three Olympics that a Russian boxer has taken gold in this weight class. Levit, who was Kazakhstan’s first-ever entry into the heavyweight competition, takes silver.
Winning the bronze medal matches were Cuba’s Erislandy Savon and Uzbekistan’s Rustam Tulaganov.
