Rafael Nadal, Fernando Verdasco talk Rio Olympic doubles

Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco have discussed playing doubles for Spain at the Rio Olympics and will do so if all goes well over the next 10 months, Verdasco said, according to Marca.

Nadal, a 14-time Grand Slam singles champion and 2008 Olympic tennis gold medalist, missed the London 2012 Olympics for health reasons.

This year, Nadal failed to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since 2004 and is ranked No. 7 in the world.

Nadal hasn’t played a Grand Slam doubles match since 2005 but did play Olympic doubles in both of his appearances in Athens 2004 (with Carlos Moya, one year before the first of Nadal’s record nine French Open singles titles) and Beijing 2008 (with Tommy Robredo), never reaching the quarterfinals.
