NBC will broadcast the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics on Aug. 5 on a one-hour delay and viewers in western states will have to wait even longer to see festivities.
NBC Sports Group Chair Mark Lazarus said Monday that NBC will allow producers to "curate" the coverage to provide proper context. The ceremony will begin in in Rio, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern Time zone, at 7 p.m. ET, but NBC won't begin its coverage until an hour later for viewers on Eastern Time (8 p.m.) and Central Time (7 p.m.) zones.
"We think it's important to give context to the show," Lazarus said Monday during a press event to promote the Olympics at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
