Mikaela Shiffrin nearly won her fourth straight World Cup race on Friday. She’ll go into the new year with another podium, though, and a hefty overall standings lead.
Italian Federica Brignone won a giant slalom in Lienz, Austria, by .04 over German Viktoria Rebensburg. Shiffrin was third, .08 behind.
Shiffrin trailed Rebensburg by .05 after the first run in the morning. The American then had the eighth-fastest run in the afternoon.
Shiffrin went into the race having won the last three World Cup events — a giant slalom and parallel slalom in Courchevel, France, and a slalom in Lienz on Thursday.
