Mikaela Shiffrin extends absence from Alpine skiing World Cup

Mikaela Shiffrin is expected to miss this weekend’s World Cup races in Slovenia, extending her break since the Feb. 2 death of her father.

Shiffrin is not on the start list for Saturday’s giant slalom and is also expected to be out for Sunday’s slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, according to U.S. Ski & Snowboard. It will mark the first time since she burst on the scene in 2013 that she will miss a traditional giant slalom or slalom, aside from physical injury. She previously skipped parallel and city events.

“Our continued thoughts go out to the Mikaela, [mother] Eileen and [brother] Taylor as they deal with the incredible loss of their father and husband Jeff Shiffrin,” read a statement from Shiffrin’s management team.
