RIO DE JANEIRO – While the United States women’s soccer team sits just three games from a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal, the American men’s squad is nowhere to be seen in Rio.
And Landon Donovan is sick of the questions.
Ever since the start of the Games, Donovan, arguably the greatest player the U.S. has ever produced, has found himself quizzed by fans and passers-by why the American men are not part of the competition.
“It is not an easy thing to answer,” he told USA TODAY Sports by telephone. “The optimist in me wants to say that we were just unlucky on a couple of given days but it is a problem, it is worrying and it is a missed chance.
