RIO DE JANEIRO — Anyone who has seen Kevin Durant shirtless knows how much pride he takes in his home state.

Right there across the back of his near-7-foot frame, written in letters so big they can be seen from across an NBA locker room, his tattoo says it all.

“Maryland,” it reads, with clouds in the background and an angel below.

So imagine the former NBA MVP’s glee at the unlikely reality that two of the most dominant American Olympians in Rio hail from his part of the world: Michael Phelps, aka “The Baltimore Bullet, and Bethesda, Md.
