Kazakhstan’s Yeleussinov takes gold in welterweight boxing

Kazakhstan’s streak of Olympic gold medalists in the welterweight division was extended to four on Wednesday, as Daniyar Yeleussinov took gold with a win over Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov in the gold medal bout.

Yeleussinov won by unanimous decision, beating Giyasov by scores of 29-28 on all three cards. The last time Kazakhstan didn’t win the welterweight division was 2000, with Russia’s Oleg Saitov taking gold in those Olympics. Kazakhstan did not medal in the division in those Games, with Daniyar Munaytbasov being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Yeleussinov, the second seed in the tournament, won all four of his bouts by unanimous decision.
