Javier Fernandez, in final competition, third in men’s field

In what he said will be his final competition, Javier Fernandez from Spain is in third place heading into the men’s free skate at the European Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

Fernandez has only trained for the past couple of weeks, choosing instead to take the fall season off. He is aiming for his seventh consecutive European title.

Fernandez hung on to his opening quad toe, to which he added a double toe in combination. His short program, set to “Malagueña,” also included a quad Salchow and a triple Axel, on which he stepped out of the landing.
