Japan's women's gymnastics team will be without captain Shoko Miyata at the 2024 Olympics due to a code of conduct violation.
The Japanese Gymnastics Association announced on Friday that Miyata, who is 19 years old, has withdrawn from the team after it was determined she violated their code of conduct by smoking and drinking alcohol.
Per Kanako Takahara of the Japan Times, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol is illegal for persons under the age of 20 in Japan.
Takahara noted the Japanese Gymnastics Association code of conduct "effectively" bans national team athletes from smoking and drinking during team activities even if they are of legal age.
