Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu earns the 1,000th Winter Olympics gold medal

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu won the 1000th gold medal in the history of the Winter Olympics, reaching the milestone in the men’s individual figure skating competition.

It took 23 Games to achieve the benchmark. The inaugural Olympics was held in Chamonix, France in 1924.

Yuzuru, who also took gold in the individual competition at the 2014 Sochi Games, becomes the first male skater to win back-to-back in the event in 66 years since American Dick Button achieved the feat in 1948 and 1952.
