IOC seeks to give WADA more independence in anti-doping efforts

As the World Anti-Doping Agency has pushed for recognition of its independence in the wake of the Russian doping scandals, recommendations from an International Olympic Committee summit on Saturday sought to give it more independence, ostensibly more power and possibly more money.

The IOC is the latest to hold a discussion on anti-doping reform following the Rio Olympics, where the IOC’s decision not to ban Russia for operating a widespread, state-sponsored doping system against WADA’s recommendation has sown discord.

While asserting that WADA remains the global regulator for anti-doping, the IOC summit’s recommendations included the following:
