Germany, New Zealand, Hungary, and Spain scooped up gold medals on a busy morning of canoe-kayak at the Olympics in Rio.
Germany got off to a great start, taking gold in men’s canoe single 1000m and silver in women’s kayak double 500m.
The gold came through Sebastian Brendel’s sterling 3:56.92, about a1.5 seconds better than Brazilian silver medalist Isaquias Queiroz Dos Santos. Moldova’s Serghei Tarnovschi finished third.

German duo Franziska Weber and Tina Dietze came within .05 from making it back-to-back event golds, but Hungary’s Gabriella Szabo and Danuta Kozak slid in front of them.
