Gabby Douglas Seeks to Rekindle the Olympic Fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gabby Douglas was exasperated. Again and again and again, Douglas, the defending women’s Olympic all-around gymnastics champion, emphatically slapped her right hand on one of the picnic tables that sit just past the front desk at Buckeye Gymnastics, the latest home in her nomadic career.

Douglas, 19, was not angry, exactly. She was just miffed by the skepticism surrounding a “comeback” she insisted was not a comeback at all.

“I took a break,” Douglas said between laughs, pounding on the table one more time. “It’s not like I retired for 30 years. I mean, come on.
