While the gold and silver medals in the men’s RS:X sailing competition were decided before Sunday’s medal race, there was far more suspense in the women’s RS:X with the top six racers separated by six points.
Entering the final race on 87 points, France’s Charlene Picon needed an excellent result to get onto the medal stand. Picon did that, finishing second, and that place was enough to win gold on 64 points (your highest score gets dropped, which in Picon’s case was a 27). China’s Chen Peina finished third in the final race, and her overall score of 66 was enough to take silver.
