RIO DE JANEIRO — The 2008 U.S. women’s gold medal basketball team won its eight games by an average margin of 37.6 points. The 2012 gold medal team won its eight games by an average margin of 33.6 points.
Riding a 41-game Olympic winning streak with five consecutive gold medals, this year’s team added 2015 WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne, three-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner and rookie and four-time NCAA champion Breanna Stewart for the Rio Olympics.
It’s possible — with three-time gold medalists Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings leading the way — that this year’s team is even better than the two previous teams.
