Dutch cyclist van Vleuten “conscious and responsive” after scary crash

While many were reveling or struggling with the thrilling finish to the women’s road race, the fortunes of injured Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten weren’t far from viewers’ minds.

And there’s good news on that front, as the Associated Press reports that Van Vleuten is conscious and responsive after the terrible crash that sent Team USA’s Mara Abbott home free for all but 150m of the final 10km.

The crash came on the same wild descent that cost Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali a broken collarbone on Saturday.

From the AP:

Van Vleuten was leading American rider Mara Abbott down the Vista Chinesa climb when she came to the last hard corner.
