HARTFORD, Conn. — The selection committee is sure going to have fun picking this Olympic team.

Donnell Whittenburg was his usual solid self Friday night, quietly taking the lead with an 89.90 on the first day of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. But five gymnasts are within a point of him, including three-time defending U.S. champ Sam Mikulak (89.85), four-time world champion medalist Jake Dalton (89.40) and reigning NCAA champion Yul Moldauer (89.25).

Finals are Sunday. Scores from nationals will be combined with those from the Olympic trials and used to determine the five-man team for the Rio Games.
