Canada’s Wiebe takes gold in women’s 75 kg wrestling

Canadian Erica Wiebe became the nation’s second-ever women’s wrestling Olympic gold medalist Thursday, as she won the 75 kg division.

Wiebe’s 3-0 win over Guzel Manyurova of Kazakhstan means that she joins 2008 gold medalists Carol Huynh (48 kg) as the only Canadians to take Olympic gold in a women’s wrestling competition. In winning silver Manyurova is Kazakhstan’s third women’s wrestling medalist in Rio, and at 38 years old she’s also the oldest women’s wrestling medalist.

Taking bronze were Zhang Fengliu of China and Ekaterina Bukina of Russia, with Bukina’s medal tying Japan with the most wrestling medals won in Rio with six.
