Brazil’s Conceicao wins nation’s first Olympic boxing gold medal

One day after Thiago Braz da Silva won Brazil’s first-ever Olympic pole vault gold medal, boxer Robson Conceição accomplished the same feat in his sport.

Conceição took gold in the men’s lightweight (60 kg) division, beating France’s Sofiane Oumiha in the gold medal bout by unanimous decision. While Conceição has won medals in this division at the World Amateur Championships, taking silver in 2013 and bronze last year, he did not win a medal in either of his two prior Olympic appearances (2008, 2012). After winning his first bout in Rio by technical knockout, Conceição won each of his final three bouts by unanimous decision.
