Ash Barty wins Wimbledon, first Australian women’s champ in 41 years

Ash Barty became the first Australian woman to win a Wimbledon singles title in 41 years, beating Czech Karolina Pliskova for her second major championship.

Barty, the world No. 1, prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in the first matchup of first-time Wimbledon women’s finalists since 1977.

She won the first 14 points and broke serve the first three times against Pliskova, a power player who was world No. 1 for eight weeks in 2017. Barty was broken while serving for the match in the second set before Pliskova pushed it to a third.
