Arrest raises more questions about IOC’s response to Rio scandal

After the Salt Lake City bid scandal, the International Olympic Committee didn’t wait for criminal charges to be brought. In the face of public and U.S. governmental pressure, it formed its own investigation and quickly expelled 10 members.

That type of response — a willingness to get to the bottom of a scandal that damages the IOC’s reputation — is what Canadian IOC member Dick Pound would like to see now.

Carlos Nuzman, the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the consummate IOC power broker, was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, the latest in an investigation into alleged vote buying that helped the city secure last year’s Olympics.
