American boxer Hernandez springs upset in light flyweight tournament

Having won a silver medal at last year’s World Championships, Russian boxer Vasilii Egorov was expected to be a medal contender in the light flyweight division.

Monday afternoon Egorov, who received a bye into the Round of 16, was upset by American Nico Hernandez. Hernandez won the match by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the bout 29-28 in Hernandez’s favor. Hernandez, who beat Italy’s Manuel Cappai by unanimous decision in the Round of 32, advances to fight Ecuador’s Carlos Quipo in the quarterfinal round Wednesday afternoon.

Like Egorov, Quipo received passage directly into the Round of 16.
