RIO DE JANEIRO — Abbey D’Agostino, who fell in the 5,000 meters on Tuesday, suffered a season-ending knee injury and will not be able to compete in the final.
An MRI administered Tuesday revealed a complete tear of her right ACL, a meniscus tear, and a strained MCL, according to a statement released by USA Track and Field.
D'Agostino's fall, and what happened after, became one of the stories of the Games. D'Agostino tripped on Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand, who had fallen in front of her, two-thirds of the way through the race. The two helped each other up, and after the finish — after D'Agostino struggled to finish on her badly injured knee — engaged in a moving embrace.
