Lydia Sydnor scored the tying goal in the 60th minute Friday, and Villanova defeated 25th-ranked Old Dominion 2-1 after a shootout in a Big East field hockey matchup at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
With the final bid to the conference tournament on the line, the Wildcats (908, 4-3) won the penalty shootout 4-3.
Cox High grad Alexandria Brewer scored in the seventh minute for ODU (10-6, 3-4), making a long run on the endline and deflecting in a shot off a Villanova defender.
The Monarchs outshot the Wildcats 26-7, with keeper Erika Miller making nine saves for Villanova.
