Tuesday's regional sports roundup: Many Hampton Roads golfers qualify for match play in VSGA Senior Amateur

Five Virginia Beach golfers and a handful of others from the Hampton Roads area were among the 32 qualifiers for match play in the 72nd VSGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Tazewell's Buck Brittain took the qualifying medal by four strokes, finishing with a 69 to complement the 67 he shot Monday for a 4-under-par 136. Eighty-four golfers began the tournament.

Roger Newsom of Virginia Beach and Dave Pulk of Williamsburg were the top qualifiers from Hampton Roads, each at 5-over 145 on the Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course in Hot Springs.

Also advancing were Virginia Beach's Stephen Whitfield (148), Yorktown's Bob Bailey (150), Newport News' Jimmy Jones (151) and a group at 152 including Virginia Beach's Jeffrey Flax and Jay Serrao, Quinton's John Kinder and Chesapeake's Tony Mitchum.
