Teel: ODU, U.Va., Virginia Tech are humbled yet encouraged heading down the stretch

Virginia’s three Football Bowl Subdivision teams lost their most recent games by a combined 55 points. So consider Old Dominion, Virginia Tech and Virginia humbled yet encouraged as they enter Week 7 of the regular season.

The Cavaliers had an open date last week to reflect on their 35-21 setback at undefeated and 20th-ranked North Carolina State. The Hokies fell 45-23 Saturday to unbeaten and fifth-ranked Notre Dame, while the Monarchs lost at reigning Conference USA champion Florida Atlantic 52-33.

Yet coaches Bronco Mendenhall, Justin Fuente and Bobby Wilder said they observed promising stretches in those defeats.
