In a long-expected move that Old Dominion officials said is necessary to remain competitive in Conference USA, the school will begin providing its football and men’s and women’s basketball players yearly stipends of $2,976 in August, athletic director Wood Selig said.
The so-called full cost of attendance stipends were approved at the 2015 NCAA Convention to allow athletes to be compensated for costs such as travel, entertainment and cell phones not covered by athletic scholarships.
Division I schools are allowed to pay the full cost of attendance to every scholarship athlete. However, largely because of Title IX concerns and budget constraints, ODU will not fully fund all sports.
