NORFOLK, Va. – Two-time wrestling All-American Chris Mecate and three-time field hockey All-American Sarah Breen were named the Old Dominion University Alumni Association Athletes of the Year, while Jake Spracher of sailing and Mackenzie Payment of women’s swimming were named the 2016 recipients of the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year at the annual Old Dominion University Athletic honors banquet Monday night.
Chris Mecate finished as ODU’s seventh multiple All-American, first back-to-back All-American since Mike McCarthy in 1975-76, and first-ever back-to-back All-American in Division I wrestling. He capped off his decorated collegiate wrestling career with a fifth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships in New York.
