Ex-ODU baseball star Zach Rutherford is Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year

Former Old Dominion shortstop Zach Rutherford of Chesapeake has been selected as the Amateur Player of the Year by the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Scouts Association.

The award is based on a combination of on-field performance and cooperation with scouts, and both high school and college players are eligible.

Rutherford, a sixth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2017 Draft, played his rookie-league campaign this summer for the Princeton Rays of the Appalachian League. The Western Branch grad is hitting .260 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 49 games.

He was the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year this spring as a junior and was named a third-team All-American by ABCA/Rawlings.
