Ninth-ranked Larry Early upset second-ranked Hayden Hidlay 4-2 at 157 pounds Friday, but the Old Dominion wrestlers fell 16-15 to North Carolina State in a nonconference dual.
Early salvaged a reversal in the second period and took down Hidlay in the final frame to snap the former NCAA finalist’s four-match win streak.
The Monarchs won five matches in the dual, which had been rescheduled from Thursday.
No. 16 Michael McGee beat N.C. State’s Zurich Storm 9-4 at 125 pounds.
Oscar Smith High grad Seldon Wright, ranked 19th at 174 pounds, defefeated No. 17 Daniel Bullard 4-2 in overtime to give the Monarchs (0-2) a brief lead over the Wolfpack (4-0).
