College baseball: Friday is Opening Day for Monarchs, Spartans

Virginia Wesleyan got things started last weekend, but college baseball in South Hampton Roads gets into full swing today, when Old Dominion and Norfolk State open their seasons.

ODU, picked to finish fourth in the 12-team Conference USA, opens a three-game series at Bud Metheny Complex at 3 p.m. against Long Island University.

Norfolk State opens at 5 p.m. with the first of three home games against Villanova.

The Monarchs, coming off a 32-24 season, including a 15-15 C-USA mark, feature the pitcher/catcher combination of Sam and Kurt Sinnen. The twins, who starred at Kellam High, are among the eight starters returning.
