Big 8th inning helps ODU outlast West Virginia in baseball

Old Dominion broke open a tight game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to defeat West Virginia 7-4 and take two out of three in their nonconference baseball series at Bud Metheny Complex.

Turner Bishop (Kellam) scored on an error to get things started in the eighth. Vinnie Pasquantino laced a two-run double and Zach Rutherford (Western Branch) and Carson Henry (Greenbrier Christian) followed with RBI singles. The Monarchs sent 10 men to the plate.

The Mountaineers responded with three runs in the ninth – two were unearned – but left-handed reliever Corey Klak (Western Branch) got Kyle Gray to ground out to second with a runner on second to end the game.
