OSU football: Report card gives high marks to Cowboy defense

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — OSU won a meat grinder of a football game Saturday, 20-13 at West Virginia, and the grades reflect a dominant defense and a retooled offense playing without quarterback Spencer Sanders.

Short-yardage defense: A.

The Mountaineers 16 times faced four yards or fewer for a first down. They converted only four of those plays. WVU was just three of nine when needing only one yard for a first down. The OSU defense’s proudest moment was the second-quarter goal-line stand, when linebacker Amen Ogbongbemgia and nose guard Cameron Murray twice rebuffed Jarret Doege on quarterback sneaks from the 1-yard line, then after a false-start penalty against WVU, Trace Ford tipped a Doege pass.
