OSU Football: Remember When Dirk Koetter Nearly Coached Cowboys?

Dirk Koetter did Oklahoma State a favor.

He thought better of the school’s job offer in December of 2000, after already agreeing to become the Cowboys coach.

Sure, it left OSU hanging. Bob Simmons had been fired and the Cowboys needed a good hire to rise from the bottom of the Big 12. And there they were, left looking like the jilted bride, with the news of Koetter’s hiring public to the point that a press conference had been set.

Kudo’s rolled in on the hire from afar, celebrating the hire as Koetter was seen as a rising star in the profession, the original Boise State architect.
