Oklahoma attorney general's letter to NCAA calls OSU basketball penalties 'unjustifiable' and 'excessive'

In a four-page letter sent to the NCAA, Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter denounced the punishment of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball program.

A press release from Hunter’s office described the penalties passed down by the NCAA earlier this month as “punitive, and totally unwarranted.”

The penalties, which included a postseason ban for the 2020-21 season, three years’ probation and a loss of future scholarships, among other punishments, stemmed from the actions of former OSU assistant Lamont Evans.

Evans, who spent a year on Brad Underwood’s staff but never coached a game under current head coach Mike Boynton, was fired after he received federal charges in September 2017.
