How high school sports shaped Mike Gundy

The Oklahoman staged its second annual All-City Prep Sports Awards on Tuesday night, with more than 1,100 in attendance at the Cox Convention Center and Venus Williams highlighting the festivities with a lengthy conversation about her life and career.

And the banquet concluded with a special surprise announcement. We established a new honor, the Hall of Fame Award, and the first recipient was OSU coach Mike Gundy.

Gundy was the 1985 Big All-City football player of the year, after quarterbacking Midwest City to the Class 5A state championship. Gundy, of course, went on to set the Big Eight record for career passing yards, eventually became the Cowboy coach and in 13 seasons has compiled a record of 114-53.
