Less than two minutes into Mason Cox's debut for Collingwood on Anzac Day on Monday against Essendon, Cox became the first born-and-raised American to score a goal in an Australian Football League game.
Cox, a Oklahoma State basketball walk-on in 2011-14, made his debut in front of more than 85,000 fans at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The 25-year-old used his 6-foot-11 frame to pull down a mark then kicked in the score from 27 yards out. It was the first score en route to the Magpies' 69-point win.
"It's only 80,000 people here and you've only played the game for two years, but then it's kind of like, ‘Yeah, cool; I'll just try this out,'" Cox said afterward, according to the Herald Sun.
