Berry Tramel: NCAA cancels championships, a sad but necessary move during coronavirus threat

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — At noon Thursday, we lamented the cancellation of the Big 12 Tournament.

Fans flooding the Power & Light District. OSU holding onto what commissioner Bob Bowlsby called the Horatio Alger hopes of March. Kansas big man Udoka Azubuike, who had been injured and missed this KC classic three years running, receiving his player — of the year trophy in front of 10,000 adoring Jayhawk fans.

Before sundown, the loss of the little ol’ Big 12 Tournament didn’t seem so important.

The NCAA on Thursday afternoon cancelled all winter and spring championships.

No NCAA basketball tournament.
