Sooners DC Mike Stoops out a day after Longhorns put up 48 on Oklahoma in Red River Showdown

A day after Oklahoma's defense allowed Texas its highest point total in the Red River Showdown, Mike Stoops has paid the price.

Longtime OU reporter James Hale was the first to report that Stoops was out as defensive coordinator, followed by a wave of confirmations on Sunday. Oklahoma has two former defensive coordinators on staff in Ruffin McNeill or Bob Diaco who could take over.

Stoops, 56 and the brother of former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, was in his second stint at Oklahoma, returning in 2012 after being fired as Arizona's head coach.

Since taking over from Bob Stoops in June 2017, Lincoln Riley's tenure had been characterized by continuity and a lack of drama.
