OU football: Sooners' running backs staying fresh early

NORMAN — Waking up on Sunday mornings has been a bit easier this September for Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon than it was a year ago.

“I’ve definitely been less sore,” Sermon said. “I still go in and get my treatment just for the bumps and bruises but it’s never really anything.

“It’s been pretty smooth.”

Through nonconference play, quarterback Jalen Hurts has been the Sooners’ most-used rusher with 38 carries.

Hurts’ workload has kept the running backs fresh early in the season.

Through three games, Sermon has 27 carries. That’s not a big drop off from the last two seasons — he had 29 through three games last season and 31 through the same stretch as a freshman — but it’s made a difference.
