OU football: Joe Mixon's historic day revives memories of another Joe

NORMAN – The 60-something man in the blue suit stood on the crimson paint of Owen Field's south end zone and marveled at what he had just witnessed.

This once was Joe Washington's stage. More than 40 years ago, Little Joe performed Sooner football feats not seen before or since. Well, until Saturday, when another Joe, Mixon, revived memories of all-time Sooner greats.

OU beat Kansas State 38-17, and while quarterback Baker Mayfield was stunningly effective and receiver Dede Westbrook continued an historic pace, Mixon stole the show.

Mixon threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Westbrook; no Sooner running back had tossed a TD pass since Washington flung a 40-yarder to Tinker Owens in the 1973 Texas game.
