I feel sorry for Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield does not make an easy sympathetic figure. Hard to play the underdog card when you’re the overall No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Hard to make the slighted case when you’ve had more Heisman Trophy voting support than any quarterback ever.
No decent scholarship offer coming out of Lake Travis? OK. Sharing time at Texas Tech? We understand.
But since January 2014, Mayfield has been Cinderella with no clock. Midnight never came. The pumpkin stayed a carriage.
Still, Mayfield has returned to ragamuffin status. He’s back to being Oliver Twist.
