OU football: Alex Grinch latest to show Mount Union churns out both wins and football coaches

NORMAN — St. John’s didn’t make it easy on the junior safety late in the third quarter of the 2000 Division III National Championship game.

With the game tied and the Johnnies driving, Mount Union went into quarters coverage as St. John’s quarterback faked a draw before dropping back to pass.

The Raiders safety had to think quickly.

First read. Second read. Third read.

Finally — even though it all happened in the blink of an eye — Alex Grinch had his read, stepped in front of a receiver, picked off the ball.

The interception ended a Johnnies’ scoring chance and played a big part in Mount Union’s eventual 10-7 win.
