Late Monday night, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was trending on X after a viral post accused him of gambling on sports in 2022 and included screenshots of Venmo transactions from Mateer's account that were titled, "Sports Gambling (UCLA vs. USC)" and "Sports gambling." Gambling on college sports as a student-athlete is against NCAA rules.
However, within 24 hours, it looks like the whole fiasco is behind us. Mateer released a statement Tuesday afternoon that denied the allegation. He confirmed the Venmo account was his, but said the transaction titles related to gambling were "inside jokes.
