According to a Monday report from Robert Allen of Oklahoma State 247Sports affiliate site GoPokes.com, former Oklahoma head coach Gary Gibbs is joining Mike Gundy’s staff in a support role.
After playing linebacker for the Oklahoma Sooners in the early 1970s, Gibbs joined the OU staff as a grad assistant in 1975. He stayed on staff as a linebackers coach (1978-88) and defensive coordinator (1981-88) before being elevated to head coach following Barry Switzer’s resignation. The program was in utter turmoil when he took over, but he did manage to keep OU’s head above water for most of his tenure.
