The Sooners may be second among teams that have appeared No. 1 the most, but they are No. 1 by a comfortable margin among teams that have been ranked in the top five of the weekly AP poll. OU was ranked in the top five of the AP poll in 13 of 16 weeks last season, finishing at No. 3.
Prior to the 2017 season, Oklahoma had been ranked in the top five of the AP Top-25 poll 395 times out of 1,195 AP polls published since 1936.
